rev. billy brings the gospel to dc

I walked in to the Busboys and Poets at 5th and K Sts. in D.C. just as the show was getting underway. Reverend Billy was descending a spiral staircase in the middle of the two-story space, and the noise he and his entourage of 16 singers, dancers and performers — the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir — was turning heads throughout the restaurant. The Reverend was clad in a cerulean jacket with matching slacks, a black shirt, and a priest’s stiff white collar. Most of his performers, who ranged widely in age and appearance, wore shiny green robes. One was an … Continue Reading

In defense of “All You Need Is Love”

Entertainment Weekly has picked their 50 best Beatles songs and worst five. And “All You Need Is Love” is … on the “worst” list. EW‘s take: “All You Need Is Love … which get [sic] repeated to the point of self-parody in this catchy but thoroughly maddening novelty song.” (I am not usually a siccer, but I’m happy to sic all over this statement.) Novelty song? Maybe “Octopus’s Garden”, “Yellow Submarine”, “Maxwell Silverhammer”, and “All Together Now” would fit in that category. But not “All You Need Is Love.” From the Wikpedia entry on the song:

“It was an inspired song … Continue Reading

music and poetry

Some new music I’ve been enjoying: * Koushik, Beep Tape (link to free download of .zip, don’t know how long the freebie will last though) * Nels Cline and G.E. Stinson, Elevating Device — an experimental 45-minute piece. I want to play it on my show, but should I play the whole thing or just an excerpt? Thanks to Chris Schlarb for dropping me a copy. Also, do you know David First? He was in the Notekillers. Unfortunately, their website does not offer free MP3 downloads. I saw them open for Tortoise a few years ago and was really blown away by the … Continue Reading

en route to cleveland

Had a character of a cab driver this morning. Glasses this odd sort with the lenses tilted away from the brow ridge, at about a 45 degree angle. She threw her arm over the back of the middle of the front seat and dangled her pudgy tan hand near the back of the passenger’s-side headrest, in front of me. I told her I was a writer, which I unintentionally said in a self-deprecating tone. Why don’t I take more pride in my craft? She discouraged this tone by saying that she appreciated writing, and even wrote herself. She had shown some … Continue Reading
